Basic Cost of Publishing with Sleepytown Press
The basic fee is $400.00.
NOW: For the remainder of 2014, If your manuscript is accepted for publishing, the fee is $400. (The Economy has taken a toll on a lot of people. Many publishing houses have had to change deadlines and many have limited how many books are being published this year. Some publishing houses are closing. Sleepytown Press wants to do something to help others. That is why the "fee" is lower for 2014. It still cost us the same, but we want to "pay it forward" by doing something for authors.)
SPECIAL CASES: Hardback books create a different cost and retail because of the cover and book jacket. Example: A paperback book that cost $4.00 to print for the author will cost $10.00 as a hardcover book.
If you and I decide to publish your trade paperback book or Children's Book, it will cost you only $400.
What do you get for your investment?
*A fully designed author-approved cover. (I would give you several examples to see and then you tell me what you like and do not like.)
*An ISBN and Bar Code for your book. (The ISBN is assigned to the publisher. If the book is out of print, the ISBN is no longer usable. The same is true with the bar code.)
*After the first year, there is a $12 per year fee to keep the file current with my printer service. They require the fee annually.
*The book will be on the company web site.
*The book will be listed on my web site and featured in my newsletter at no cost to the author.
*When SP goes to conferences and book fairs, your book will always be represented.
*The author will have a bio on the company web site. Special mailings and author pages will be mailed to the author to use as the author chooses.
*The book will be formatted and printed through Lightning Source. They are also Ingram. You might have already heard about them.
*Your book will be formated for Kindle to sell on Amazon as an eBook. (Color Books are not formated for Kindle at this time. There are other available options.) All books will be offered as a PDF download, which may be read on any computer, iPad, or device that is capable of downloading items from a website or email.
*The book will be available on Amazon and other online book companies, as well as Baker & Taylor. (As allowed by each group.)
*Bookmarks will be designed for the book, if requested. The author then may use them as he/she wishes.
*The author will be allowed to purchase the book at cost. (Example: If the book retails for $9.95, the cost to the author for copies could be a little as $3.00 per copy. It depends on the number of pages and size.) This figure would change according to cost and retail price of the book. The author will get an idea of this figure, when the author submits all needed material.
*Illustrations may be part of the book, if formatted for company use. (Special conditions apply.) Color Books require illustrations scanned at 300dpi and saved to a disk as jpg. Sleepytown Press does not illustrate books as part of the Publishing Fee.
*Illustrations are the responsibility of the author.
This page features the size options for color books. Most of the sizes listed are availabe as hardcover.

For this reason, If you find a mistake in the text on this web site, please drop me an email or a comment and let me know where you found it. I am human and humans do make mistakes typing. Please, do not do this. "I was reading on your web site the other day and found a typing error." Please, tell me where and what. I would deeply appreciate it.
Even very popular books and authors have books with mistakes. Think: They had a "professional editor" edit the book. It happens. I have found several in the Percy Jackson books. It happens guys, even to good people like you and me.

When you choose to publish with Sleepytown Press, we need the following:
Write the following summaries in Word and save them as a single file, seperate from your manuscript. Name each file accordingly.
Cover Texts:
Author's Cover Bio: 100 words max. A short, one-paragraph description of yourself that will appear on the back cover of the book.
Book Summary: A short, one-paragraph description of your book that will appear on the back cover of the book. You want to make it short and give just enough information to cause the reader to want to read your book.
Website Texts:
Author Biography: This may be any length. A longer description of yourself or a message to your readers. It will appear on the author biography page that readers view when they click on your name within the Sleepytown Press Web site.
Book Description: Write what you would like people to know about your book. This may be any length.
If you have book reviews, please, send them. They can be placed on the back, or inside the front of the book.
How do I submit illustrations?
All illustrations or images should be scanned at 300dpi and submitted on a disk to Sleepytown Press.
1. The full text of your book should be in WORD form. Make sure you have edited the text, or have someone edit it for you. (Hopefully, you will have someone who loves chocolate and will edit for free.) You need to indent each new paragraph. Please, start a new paragraph, when the speaker changes. It is up to the author to make sure that the text is ready to format in book form. Look at other books in your own collection and you will find things that you might want to include in your book.
Sleepytown Press does not edit the text for you. If the author gives us the okay to send a file to the printer, Sleepytown Press is not liable for any corrections that may need to be done to the text or cover at a later date. For this reason, it is very important that the author submit a formatted text for publishing.
2. Have your illustrations scanned at 300dpi and saved as jpg format. If an illustration is small, the resizing can cause the illustration to be of poor quality. it is best to scan and save them at their original size. Mail the disk to Sleepytown Press at 1709 Valley Creek Road, Anniston, Alabama 36207
3. Save all image files as separate files. Save each individually on a disk. if you go to a store like Office Max, they will scan the illustrations and save them to a disk. Please do not embed or paste images in your manuscript.
4. Provide as a separate Word file the instructions on where the images will be placed in the manuscript. Type the text and "mark" where each illustation should appear.
5. Aside from the interior images, you have the option to submit the following:
-Cover Image for the front cover. Scanned at 300dpi and saved as a jpg file.
-Ideas for the cover. You get to approve the color cover. You are allowed to make suggestions.
-Author image to place on the back cover along with the Bio info.
After the book is formatted, you will get a PDF file of the book. You will also get a PDF of the cover. This is your chance to see how the published product will look. You are totally free to ask for corrections and changes. If there are any corrections, they will be made and then a NEW PDF will be sent for you to review. The text and cover will only be sent to the printer, when the author releases the PDF for publishing. Any corrections that are made, after printing, are the sole responsibility of the author. Rate: New Cover File- $60 and a New Text File- $60.
Author Compensation: Books may not receive any earned money until $100 is met.
Books sold: January - June: Payment in October
Books sold: July - December: Payment in April

We will respond using an author's email address.
Novels should be submitted as 3 sample chapters and a synopsis. Do not send in more than 75 pages. If we like your samples, we will send a request to see the rest of the manuscript.

Children's Picture books should include the entire manuscript. (If you have illustrations or samples for your story, feel free to send them as attachments. This will save us from asking for them, later. If you need an illustrator, we have a few people that you might check-out, but they do not work for Sleepytown Press.)
Chapter books should include the first three chapters and a short synopsis of the rest of the book.
Due to the high volume of submissions, we will respond back ASAP, but we ask that you give us a few days to get back to you on email submissions. All submissions will receive a response via email.
*We know that the economy has affected a lot of people and it continues to do so. We are willing to work with you in order to help you see your book in print form. (Unfortunately, SP can not be a traditional publisher. We do ask for a fee to put your book through the publishing process, but we DO NOT leave you hanging there all alone. We do try to market and help you find places for your book.)
***At this time, in order to provide some help with the economy, if your manuscript is accepted, you will receive a $100 discount off the regular $500 fee. We will also work with you, if you need to split it up into payments.
The Secret of Success as a Writer

1.Believe in yourself. Close your eyes and see yourself successful. Claim that success inside of you and soon you will see a change happen. You will see real true success. See yourself as an author with book signings, school visits, and speaking invitations. It can happen.
2. Be You. Tap into the person that you are and let others see how incredible you really are. Be yourself. Do not try to imitate anyone. BE the best YOU that anyone can be. Use your own voice and life and experiences. Don't open a Percy Jackson book and try to write like you could have written the same book. Be your own unique person.
3. Be a Go-Getter! get yourself moving and stay moving. Remember the old saying: "A rolling stone gather no moss." Do not hesitate. In the words of the Disney movie, "Keep Moving Forward." You must write every day. Open up that special notebook and write something in it. Only YOU can make yourself get up and get going each day.
4. Hang in there. Do not give up on your dream and do not let anyone talk you out of it. You will never be happy, if you do not jump in and get it going. Do something for you. You deserve it. You will get road blocks and spike chains thrown in front of you, but go around them or flap your arms and soar over them. Leap over obsticles.
Today might just be the start of you finding success. There is truth in positive thinking. You are here, on this web page, reading this article because YOU, my friend, are a writer, author, illustrator, and it is your time for success.
Reach out and take the "golden" ring. It is yours. Claim it.
Something to think about:
Royalties: We pay 100% per print copy sold, after expenses. No royalties on author purchases. This is not 100% of the retail price. The author may purchase unlimited copies of their own book at cost. This does not include possible downloads or electronic books. (Lightning Source does not send out a check for royalties until an author has at least $25.00 due to them.)
Wholesale Distribution and Sales: All sales through Ingram distributors, Baker & Taylor, Amazon , book stores, libraries, and etc. like for us to sell books to them at a large percentage (55%) off the retail price. (Or more.) This affects the amount of royalties paid to the author. The author is paid according to the profit from these sources. (You may choose to allow a smaller discount.) (The discount that you allow bookstores may be as low as 20% or as high as 55%. it is your choice.)
*If you care more about how much you make as opposed to getting a store to carry your book, you may allow any percentage that you like for your book. Recently, a Sleepytown Press author asked me to change the discount to 30% so that the author would get more from Amazon sales and such. The 55% is the usual trade discount. That is also why Amazon advertises your book for less than you can charge.
**You set the retail price of your book. You basically decide how much you want to make off of online sales.
Example: Your book retails for $10.95. Online book sellers are given a 55% discount off the retail of your book. The book is printed and the cost of printing is deducted from the retail as well as the discount for the company purchasing your book for sale on there website or in their book store. You will not "break-the-bank" through those sales, but that is normal for any author.
You will make the most off your book at signings, conventions, special events, and such that you schedule. You, as the author, will be able to purchase your book at a BIG discount. You then are free to sell the book for retail or less and keep the profit.
NOTE: Authors are welcome to sell their own books on their web site, if they choose to handle the shipping and order filling. Authors may purchase their own books and sell them at book signings, conferences, and at any other personal event. Most publishers will not allow an author to sell their own books online. Sleepytown Press is more interested in making this a relationship that you enjoy instead of one that you endure.
THIS IS ALLOWED: The author will be able to purchase their book at a low discount. You are fully allowed to sell those books at book signings, school visits, among your family and friends at any price that you set. You keep the profit over the cost of you ordering your book.
Another example: "Sleepytown," the children's book, retails for $10.95. The author purchased 50 of the books at $3.00 each. Then, he elected to sell them at a book signing for $8.00 each. The author kept the amount, minus $3.00 as profit. Nothing was owed to the publisher, nor anyone else.
The publisher may offer a discounted price at some time in order to do a special promotion for a book. (Author must agree to the terms of the sale.)
The publisher will promote the book through the company web site and through other sources, as they become available.
The author retains the ownership and copyright to the book.
What happens with the submission?
1. Author sends a submission via sleepytownpress@yahoo.com
2. The author will receive a confirmation email with additional information.
3. Within one to two weeks, The author will receive either an offer of publication or a note informing him\her of the publisher choosing to "pass on the submitted manuscript." We want the authors to be very proud of what we offer the author. We choose not to publish every manuscript that is sent to us. We believe that quality is more important than quantity.
4. If the author is sent an intent to publish email, he\she may then take one to two weeks to review the information and send back an email expressing his/her intentions.
5. The publisher will then send the author a contract to sign and return to the publisher.
6. When the required items are returned to the publisher, the process is started and the author will hold a book in their hands ASAP. It is up to you. As soon as you approve the supplied PDF of your book and the PDF of the cover, the process moves forward from there. When the text and cover are both sent to Lightning Source for Publishing and Printing, you could have a book in your hands within two weeks. (The book will show on Amazon almost immediately. Sometimes, the book will list before the cover image is shown. The book may still be ordered by the general public as soon as it appears.)
7. The promotion of the book begins immediately!
