Lisa J. Michaels
Lisa J. Michaels has been a professional illustrator of children's literature since 2003, but she was illustrating long before that. She created her first picture book at the ripe old age of eight! It amazed her family and teachers, and lit a fire that still brightly burns today.
Since then, she has won several awards for her talent and her work has been published both traditionally and all over the web. Her extensive portfolio collection can be viewed at http://www.ljmichaels-illustrator.com/.
As a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (www.scbwi.org ) since 2003, Lisa created the first and only officially sanctioned on-line illustration critique group for all of SCBWI’s Florida illustrators.
She imagined, dreamt of, designed and created The Visual Storytellers Studio, and currently serves as it's proud moderator. Free to thousands of visitors, the ad free and child friendly “VSS” contains new illustrations that are posted daily, from over 40 of the best and brightest illustrators in children’s publishing. It’s interviews and podcasts give fans an in-depth look at their favorite illustrators from across the globe.
As the creator and moderator for “The Yellow Brick Road”, (a privacy-protected on-line critique group of 25+ professional children's book writers) Lisa continually hones her writing skills. She has become well versed in the field of children’s book publishing and continues to seek out new industry information that will benefit herself, her clients, and her colleagues.
In addition, she is well known for her manuscript critiquing services, where she shares her unique “illustrator perspective” with her growing list of satisfied clients.
“I believe that my line-by-line critiques greatly improve a writers chance for publisher acceptance, as I help my clients to see their manuscripts through the eyes of the editor and the illustrator.
Most writers are clueless regarding the illustrators responsibilities and how they go about utilizing their talent and art education. I take the mystery out of it, and give my authors an insiders view that enhances their ability to see the project as the true collaborative effort that it should be.”

Illustrator: Deborah Eve Alastra
Basically I am a painter of 30 years, now also illustrating children's books, and creating a few of my own children's picture books with illustrations for practise. I also teach Art to elementary age children part time. I have fallen in love with children's illustration, including cover art and digital layout. I combine mixed media hand renderings with digital editing, so the outcome is rather unique, modern looking yet not identical to so much of the computer generated children's illustrations. I am hoping to continue and develop with more work.
I have a BA in Fine Arts from the University of California, and two years of Arts study at the Bellas Artes in Guanajuato, Mexico. I am very interested in ethnically diverse children's books, and also adore animals in children's stories (and life...). Please view my portfolios and links.
I have completed three books of children's illustrations for independent authors, and one for a small children's educational publisher in Amherst Mass., Pioneer Valley Books. 'Peppy Puppy in Paradise' by Edgar Nash available on Amazon, and soon to be published 'A Fairy's Flight' by Linda Carlin and 'Sometimes I Don't Want to Sleep', a bilingual poem by Rosalinda Vargas.
