Wonderful story and beautiful illustrations!, August 9, 2011 By Frenchfilmfan - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Henry and Matilda's Adventures in New York (Paperback) After a friend showed this lovely children's book to me, I bought a bunch of copies as gifts for my nieces and nephews and friends' children.
The book tells the story of a dog named Henry and a grey hen named Matilda who live on a farm in the countryside and decide to embark on an adventure. They travel in Farmer Judy's vegetable truck to New York City, where they visit the Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty; they also admire the sights along the busy sidewalks, take the subway, and, most amusingly, attend a Broadway play.
Henry and Matilda's Adventures in New York City exposes children to important elements of a wonderful American city in the way that one experiences new places for the first time. One of the more interesting aspects of the book is that although adults are present in the story, we see New York City entirely through the perspective of the two main characters as they make numerous discoveries in the Big Apple.
Children and adults will marvel at the exquisite watercolor illustrations, which are brightly colored and beautifully drawn. The lively images of Henry and Matilda in the exciting atmosphere of New York City complement the written text very well and they add interesting--and often quite humorous--dimensions to an already entertaining story. My 5-year old nephew and I spent a great deal of time discussing the images as they pertained to the story; we also laughed and smiled throughout the entire reading.
The ideal readership of this book spans ages 4-10. Adults would need to read the story to younger children and discuss the images and cultural concepts with them; older children who are capable of reading the book on their own will find the book equally appealing. In both cases, children will learn about a new city, think about their own travels, and consider places that they might like to visit in the future. This will certainly lead to a rich discussion between adults and children--and among children themselves--about past and future voyages and new life experiences.
The book includes an interactive activity at the website henryandmatilda.com that allows children to write to Henry and Matilda on-line and recount their own travel adventures to them. This site therefore provides additional reading and writing activities that encourage children to learn about each other's travels. This is a great activity for younger children to do with their parents and for older children to do independently. My nephew and I plan on writing about our recent travels to San Antonio, Texas.
Since Henry and Matilda are so enthusiastic about their travels after they return to the farm, I have the impression that they'll soon be ready to embark on another voyage. I hope that this is the first of a series of adventures that will lead Henry and Matilda to interesting cities across the United States and throughout the world.
Great classroom read-aloud!, August 10, 2011 By Trolli - See all my reviews This review is from: Henry and Matilda's Adventures in New York (Paperback) This book is going to be perfect to read to my kindergartners this year. The story concept, engaging characters, beautiful illustrations, and interesting language and details will make for lots to talk about! This book is the perfect combination of animal-character narrative and authentic facts about the location with which to take my students on imaginary field trip. This book has many special details to bring the place alive, such as a little history of the provenance of the Statue of Liberty and local-color language about "taking in" a Broadway show. I would love to see more books about Henry and Matilda's adventures, so my class can keep traveling with them!
